Tokyo Dental College trains surgeons and surgical scientists who possess not only advanced techniques and methodologies but also the skills required for information gathering and analysis, both in research and clinical practice in oral surgery. Through this training, they gain experience in both clinical medicine and basic research. As part of our unique PhD program, fellows acquire the ability to apply fundamental scientific knowledge in practical settings.
Tokyo Dental College operates three medical institutions that provide advanced dental care and serve their communities as core hospitals. From the fifth year onward, students participate in treatments at these institutions, which also function as educational facilities. This hands-on training prepares students to deliver holistic medical care focused on dentistry and the oral region.
The Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at Tokyo Dental College offers future fellows practical training and research opportunities across three hospitals. The main site for both clinical training and research is Suidobashi Hospital, while Chiba Dental Medical Center provides additional practical training options. In terms of clinical practice, the department performs surgeries in the following areas: orthognathic surgery, oncologic surgery, maxillofacial reconstructive surgery, maxillofacial nerve injury, maxillofacial infection, and maxillofacial trauma. We perform the highest number of jaw deformity surgeries in Japan—around 300 per year.
Our research focuses on examination, training, and education using new technologies such as 3D printing, navigation software, and spatial reality displays. These areas have seen active development in recent years. Our main research topics include regenerative medicine using iPS cells, wound healing and regenerative medicine, maxillofacial deformities, congenital anomalies such as cleft lip and palate, temporomandibular joint disease, maxillofacial implants, and the clinical and basic environment of speech and language.
