The Department of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Bern is an international team, performing a wide range of oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures. The department’s main speciality is facial trauma surgery. Our specific areas of surgical and clinical expertise include:
  • Facial traumatology and secondary correction of post-traumatic deformities
  • Treatment of cranio-maxillofacial anomalies, orthognathic surgery, including virtual planning, patient-specific cutting guides, and patient-specific implants
  • Surgery of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), including arthroscopic and open joint surgery
  • Tumor surgery and facial reconstruction, including 3D planning, intraoperative navigation and patient-specific implants
  • Surgery of the anterior skull base

We work closely with the Emergency Center at the University Hospital, a Level I trauma unit serving approximately 1.7 million people in central Switzerland. This center is the only facility in our region providing 24-hour maxillofacial and neurosurgical trauma services. Our department is responsible for treating not only fractures of the facial skeleton but also complex fractures involving the anterior skull base and frontal skull. The anterior skull base surgery, which originally developed from our department's experience in facial traumatology (Prof. Joram Raveh), has expanded to include tumor surgeries involving the orbital, ethmoidal, and sphenoidal regions. In cooperation with the School of Dental Medicine, our department specializes in extensive augmentation and reconstruction of alveolar bone to enable subsequent implant-supported oral rehabilitation.

For a short-term residency of 1 to 3 months, our department is most suitable for clinical training in the fields of facial traumatology and cranio-maxillofacial osteosynthesis. For applicants interested in extensive clinical training in different surgical fields, a residential and scientific fellowship (duration 1 year) is also available. A possible component of the residential and scientific fellowship is active participation in a research project in the field of bone biology, with special attention given to bone regeneration of the facial skeleton. Therefore, the fellow’s time will be split between theoretical work, clinical mentoring, and if desired research activities. The actual time allocated to each component will be individually arranged with the candidate.

The fellow should have previous qualifications in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and his/her research interests and experience should complement the research priorities of our department.
