The Department of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Bern represents an international team, performing a wide range of oral and maxillofacial surgery. The specific areas of our surgical and clinical expertise include:

  • Facial traumatology and secondary correction of posttraumatic deformities
  • Treatment of cranio-maxillofacial anomalies, including various types of osteotomies of the craniofacial skeleton and distraction osteogenesis and orthognathic surgery
  • Surgery of the TMJ (arthroscopic surgery and open joint surgery)
  • Tumor surgery and facial reconstruction, including microsurgery
  • Surgery of the anterior skull base
The department works closely with the Emergency Center at the University Hospital, which is a Level I trauma unit serving a population of approximately 1.7 million in central Switzerland. This center is the only unit providing 24-hour maxillofacial and neurosurgical trauma service in this region. Our department is responsible for treating not only fractures of the facial skeleton, but also complex fractures involving the anterior skull base and the frontal skull.

The anterior skull base surgery originally developed from the facial traumatology in our department has been extended to cover tumor surgery involving the orbita, ethmoidal, and sphenoidal regions. We also perform surgical techniques with unique osteotomies for correction of facial deformities caused by congenital anomalies and post-trauma.

In cooperation with the School of Dental Medicine, our department specializes in extensive augmentation and reconstruction of alveolar bone to enable subsequent implant-supported oral rehabilitation.

For a short-term residency of 1 to 3 months, our department is most suitable for clinical training in the fields of facial traumatology and cranio-maxillofacial osteosynthesis. For applicants interested in extensive clinical training in different surgical fields, a residential and scientific fellowship (duration 1 year) is also available. A significant component of the residential and scientific fellowship is active participation in a research project in the field of bone biology, with special attention given to bone regeneration of the facial skeleton. Therefore, the fellow’s time will be split between theoretical work, clinical mentoring, and research. The actual time allocated to each component will be individually arranged with the candidate.

The fellow should have previous qualifications in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and his/her research interests and experience should complement the research priorities of our department.

Foreign candidates need an official work permit, which will be arranged by the University Hospital (only for the duration of the scholarship program). Because of the time needed to complete the administrative process, we ask candidates to submit their applications for the fellowship, including all necessary documents, 12 months before starting the program.
