The Department of Maxillofacial Surgery and Stomatology at the University Hospital of Amiens handles all aspects of our specialty, but our surgical and clinical expertise focuses on:

  • Microsurgical reconstruction for cancer surgery, secondary reconstruction after trauma or radionecrosis
  • Facial traumatology and secondary reconstruction after trauma
  • Malformations, especially cleft lip and palate
  • Skin tumors and all reconstructive surgery
  • Orthognathic and preimplant surgery
  • Esthetic surgery

Our department is the only department of maxillofacial surgery in the region of Picardy. We serve one million inhabitants in and around the city of Amiens (population 140,000), handling all maxillofacial emergencies. A trauma center and a department of neurosurgery are linked with the emergency department.

Microsurgery is our main field of expertise, and over many years of development we have progressively extended our focus to include all types of pathologies, primary reconstruction for cancer, and in particular secondary reconstruction after severe or gunshot trauma, irradiation complicated with radionecrosis, iatrogenic complex defects, etc.

Our second field of interest is imaging, including all new technologies connected with 3D imaging, robotics, and computer-assisted surgery. Research in this field is conducted regularly.

The team is led by Professor B. Devauchelle, assisted by Professor S. Testelin. As in most departments in France, there are 1 or 2 clinical chiefs and 3 residents (training for maxillofacial surgery or plastic surgery). There are also 17 doctors, particularly odontologists, who join us for a short period each week as they work in their specific fields (odontology, orthodontics, implantology, preimplant surgery, parodontology, malformations).

The department is most suitable for a short-term residency of 1 to 3 months for clinical work.  A one-year fellowship, with greater emphasis on research, is also possible. Foreign candidates need an official work permit, which can be arranged by the university hospital. It is usually no problem to arrange accommodations.
