The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Regional Unit provides care for patients within South Yorkshire, United Kingdom and is based at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals but works in close partnership with the School of Clinical DenAstry, University of Sheffield.
Sheffield Teaching Hospitals has an annual budget of around £690 million, employs 13,000 staff and provides one million patients episodes each year, making it one of the largest NHS trusts in England.
The Oral and Maxillofacial Regional Unit is based within the buildings of the Charles Clifford Dental Hospital and the Sheffield University School of Clinical Dentistry, all within easy reach of Peak District National Park.
The department is involved in the full range of Oral and Maxillofacial, including:

  • Head and Neck Oncology surgery including micro vascular reconstruction.
  • Craniomaxillofacial trauma. Sheffield is at present a major trauma centre.
  • Facial deformity including orthognathic surgery and the treatment of facial post-traumaic deformities.
  • Dental alveolar surgery.
  • Paediatric Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
  • Salivary gland disease surgery.
  • Skull base surgery.
  • Facial dermatological surgery.
  • Tempromandibular joint surgery.
  • Facial reanimation surgery.
  • Facial aesthetic surgery.

The department works in an environment of co-operation and interface with our surgical specialities and have a close working relationship with neurosurgery, plastic surgery, ear nose and throat surgery, ophthalmology and the other members of our multi disciplinary teams for head and neck oncology and skull base surgery.
The research carried out within the School of Clinical Dentistry includes:

  • Head and neck cancer.
  • Oral neuro science.
  • Bioengineering and health technologies.

The department offers education of students of dentistry, medicine and training in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Short term residential visits (one day to three months) are possible (at the visitor’s expense). Clinical training and longer fellowships (duration one year) are also possible.

The fellow should have previous qualifications in oral and maxillofacial surgery or be on an oral and maxillofacial training pathway. The fellows research interest and experiences should compliment the research prioriAes of the department.

Applications should be sent to the Fellowship Director, Nicholas Lee for consideration, but it is suggested that applications 12 months before the start of the Fellowship Programme are advisable to complete all the necessary paperwork.
