The Duke Division of Foot and Ankle is one of the country’s top-ranked orthopaedic centers. Our unparalleled experience enables our surgeons to treat some of the most complex cases, including ankle replacement.
Collectively, in the last four years, our Foot and Ankle Team has performed over 20,000 surgical cases and is a leader in innovative research for ankle replacements, 3-D printing, and more. Duke Orthopedics is fortunate to have resources available to tackle many challenging questions in the field – ultimately to improve the outcomes and the experiences of our patients.

The Duke Foot and Ankle surgeons are among the world’s most experienced. They are trained to treat even the most complex foot and ankle conditions. They have pioneered ankle replacement surgery, as well as other novel techniques to repair cartilage, tendons, and fractures in the ankle bone and ankle joint.

Research
Research being done by the division includes slowing the progression and treating the pain of ankle arthritis, using natural compounds such as curcumin (yellow curry) and resveratrol (grape leaves) to prevent arthritis progression, attempting to find a chemical link between osteoarthritis and depression, using a patient’s own stem cells in the form of bone marrow aspirate to treat soft-tissue and bone problems, using 3D printing to make custom titanium scaffolds to fill bone voids from trauma and other diseases, ankle replacement, and flatfoot reconstruction.

Fellowship at Duke Orthopaedics
At Duke Orthopaedics, we are committed to training future generations of orthopedic surgeons. Our fellows gain experience in the diagnosis and treatment of hallux valgus, flat foot deformities, and all forms of ankle arthritis; rheumatoid arthritis and its involvement of the foot and ankle; trauma as it relates to ankle, talus, calcaneus, and midfoot fractures; sports medicine injuries of the ankle with ligamentous injury; and the role of arthroscopy.
The Department of Orthopedic Surgery has a strong tradition in training and research. Duke Orthopedics holds labs in biomechanics, basic science, animal models, translational surgery, and clinical science. The Foot and Ankle division owns two weight-bearing computerized tomographies (WBCT) with the capability to evaluate hips, knees, ankles, and feet. The laboratories comprise Ph.Ds., undergraduate students, international research fellows, and staff members. We also capacitate a clinical foot and ankle fellow per year, alongside the department's residents and medical students. In addition, the division maintains Masters and Ph.D. programs.
