The John Hunter Hospital is one of the largest Public hospital in Australia, a key teaching hospital and a tertiary referral centre.

Opening in 1991, the John Hunter Hospital brought together the heritage and cultures of four hospitals: Royal Newcastle Hospital, Mater Hospital Waratah, Western Suburbs Hospital, Waratah and Wallsend District Hospital.  The John Hunter Hospital is the region’s major tertiary referral hospital for both paediatric and adult care. JHH ED sees approximately 67,500 presentations annually (18,700 are children) and is Australia’s only major trauma centre outside of a capital city. It is the busiest trauma service and ED in NSW. Opportunities exist in retrieval medicine with the expectation that this will soon encompass primary retrieval.

Over the years, our services have grown. John Hunter Hospital is now the major trauma and teaching hospital outside Sydney and remains one of the busiest hospitals in NSW. Our Hospital plays an important part in the state’s network of tertiary services, serving not just its local and regional communities, but people from around NSW.

With support from the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and NSW Ambulance, the hospital provides a retrieval service for critically ill patients from the Hunter and North Coast.

The John Hunter health complex consists of 796 beds in total, and is co-located next to the 174 bed Newcastle Private Hospital, as well as the regional Hunter Area Pathology Service which provides tertiary level pathology testing. The complex consists of a single building, which is divided into 694 adult beds and another 126 paediatric beds in the John Hunter Children's Hospital. The Royal Newcastle Centre (formerly Royal Newcastle Hospital), opened as an extension wing to the John Hunter Hospital in April 2006, providing 144 of these beds. Patients from the Hunter Region and beyond are referred to John Hunter for treatment in a range of specialities. The John Hunter Children's Hospital and Royal Newcastle Centre are located within the same building as the John Hunter Hospital. Also on the same grounds are Rankin Park Hospital (Rehab), Newcastle Private Hospital and the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI).

Our vision is to provide each patient with world class care, exceptional service and the compassion that we would want for ourselves and our loved ones.

The CORE values are the centre of everything we do at John Hunter Hospital. They stand for Collaboration; Openness; Respect; and Empowerment. They encompass our function as a hospital, as a team, and as individuals. They help us align our goals and vision.

Whilst the John Hunter Hospital is on be of the largest Trauma hospitals in the country a considerable amount of elective surgeries for Foot and Ankle are performed at the hospital for non-insured public patients.

Examples are ankle arthroplasty, percutaneus hindfoot & forefoot surgery, care of the diabetic foot, foot deformity reconstruction & biologic injectables.
