The C.S. of Hand surgery and Microsurgery of the Policlinico of Modena is the referral Centre of Emilia-Romagna region (four million of inhabitants) of for all cases of second level as regard complexity hand surgery and microsurgery, within an "Hub and Spoke" care system. The Centre offers a 24-hours on-call service for complex lesions and microsurgical emergencies. An independent emergency reception service is provided in day time linked to a day surgery Unit where emergency and elective cases are routinely treated.
Our centre is to date one of the two Italian centres to provide a comprehensive training program in Hand Surgery (II level University Master in Hand Surgery and Microsurgery).
The Centre warrants the treatment of all the pathologies at the hand and wrist level including:

  • All the acute trauma of the hand, wrist and forearm, compartmental syndromes and life threatening infections
  • Nerve and vascular lesions at the upper limb, including acute microsurgical procedures (replantations, revascularizations, free and pedicled skin flaps, etc..) and secondary reconstructions
  • Post-traumatic sequelae affecting bones, tendons, nerves, multiple tissue lesions, Brachial plexus injuries, Volkmann contractures and joint stiffness
  • Osteoarthritic and rheumatologic deformities at the hand and wrist level.
  • Congenital deformities, Tetraplegia and Spasticity, soft tissue and bone Tumours Complex Regional Pain Syndromes, for which a multidisciplinary clinical, surgical approach and rehabilitation programs are provided.

The most relevant fields of Research are dealing with:

  • Utilization of multidirectional fixed angle devices for the treatment of both acute trauma and late sequelae at the wrist and hand level. In particular the utilization of angular stability principles will be undertaken for the treatment of wide bone loss at the metacarpal bone level by a custom-made scaffold to which independent vascular supply will be added in conjunction with G.F. and mesenchimal cells.
  • Bio-adsorbable new devices and screws (PLLA) for the treatment of thumb CMCj osteoarthrytis, scaphoid fracture and non-unions.
  • The introduction of outcome studies and new flow-charts and tests to be validated in the domain of spasticity, tetraplegia and complex regional pain syndromes.
  • The painful digital stumps were local treatment versus neurostimulation will be compared in a prospective multicenter randomized study.

The Centre is included into the Department of Patologies of the Locomotor Apparatus, composed by the Orthopaedic Clinic and the Rheabilitation Unit of the upper limb.

The wide spectrum of pathologies treated at the entire upper limb allows, both short-term and long-term residency for clinical training and active participation also to the various undergoing research projects.
