The department was founded under the guidance of Prof. Bufalini in 1979 and then continues its super-specialized activity under the guidance of Dr. Massimo Ceruso, establishing itself in the various areas of specialist competence of Hand Surgery and with the introduction over the years of new and innovative techniques in osteosynthesis, wrist surgery, arthroscopic, prosthetic joint surgery and soft parts, nerve and vascular microsurgery both in the trauma field, with digital and limb reimplants and post-traumatic reconstructions, and by election.


The activity is carried out in an ordinary hospitalization, day-surgery and outpatient regime 5 days a week and in an emergency regime with an availability carried out H / 24 365 days a year as the Unit is the Hub center for Tuscany in Italian network Coordination Emergency Hand Italia. Three specialist outpatient clinics are carried out per week and two superspecialist clinics, one for the surgical treatment of rheumatic diseases and one of ortho-neuro for peripheral nerve injuries, tetraplegia and spasticity. The department collaborates as a team with the hand surgery rehabilitation facility based in Hall 25-CTO for treatments and the construction of splints.

The activity also provides for the management of shared care pathways through collaboration with the teams belonging to the following Units in Hall 25 - CTO: Spinal Unit, Orthopedics, Oncological Orthopedics, Rheumatology and with the Pediatric Orthopedics of the Meyer Hospital.

There is a weekly briefing of clinical cases and a Didactic activity and Courses with teachings at the Specialization Schools of Orthopedics and Traumatology of the University of Florence, activities of scientific support for Degree and Specialization Theses, activities tutoring for national and international postgraduates and fellows, teaching activities at National and International Courses. Research activities are also carried out through multicentre studies, experimentation on enzymatic substances in Dupuytren, national studies no profit for implantable devices.
