The São Paulo Hand Center at "Beneficência Portuguesa" Hospital is a private hospital dedicated to Hand Surgery, linked to the educational institution "Faculdade de Medicina do ABC". 

Both institutions covers all the main activities of hand surgery specialty including:

  • Trauma (open injuries, hand fractures, wrist fractures, tendon lesions, etc)
  • Congenital Disorders
  • Degenerative Disorders
  • Microsurgery procedures (Replantation, Free Tissues Transfer, Braquial Plexus and Nerves Injuries)
  • Post Traumatic corrections (Distal radius osteotomies)
  • Arthroscopy (Wrist, Elbow, CMC joint)
  • Arthroplasty (Total Wrist Replacement, Total Elbow Replacement, CMC joint, MP and PIP joints)

São Paulo is the second large urban center in the world with a 20 million population including the great São Paulo area, which contains linked cities as Santo André where is situated the ABC Medical School and its hospital "Mario Covas" State Hospital. The "Beneficência Portuguesa" hospital is located in the center area of São Paulo, two blocks from a subway station, three blocks from Paulista Avenue, the finantial center of the city. São Paulo is on the Southeast region of Brazil, 100 km from the coastline, with a temperate weather.

The "Beneficência Portuguesa" Hospital was founded by the Portuguese community as a filantropic institution on 1874 with only 13 beds. The actual hospital with 110.000 square meters and 5 buildings, now have more than 1000 beds, counts a total of 5000 employees and 110 medical teams with a total 1.100 medical doctors in practice on all specialties of medicine. This hospital is internationally well known by the cardiac surgery experience and cardiac transplantation experience. The Hand Center was created on 2008, being independent from the Orthopaedic Group Team. The hand surgery chairman, Dr Gustavo Mantovani, is associated with the hand surgery group of the ABC Medical School, where social and public assistance is made in a high specialized state hospital at Santo André city, 30 km away from "Beneficência Portuguesa" Hospital. This educational institution has a 2 years period hand surgery training fellowship, with 2 fellows per year linked to the Brazilian Hand Surgery Association.

A short-term residency of 1-3 months is available for clinical training in hand surgery, combining a full activities schedule in both hospitals, under Dr Mantovani supervision.
