The Dandenong Fellowship program is based at Dandenong Hospital and includes both elective and trauma surgery. The hospital is located 30 minutes from Melbourne CBD and is in an industrial area. We receive trauma patients from a large catchment area encompassing the South East area of Victoria.
The Hand Surgery program is part of the Orthopaedic Surgery unit and the average case load is between 20-30 hand and wrist cases per week. There are currently 6 Consultant hand surgeons in the program who cover all aspects of hand surgery except congenital hand surgery. One surgeon also treats conditions of the elbow and one other the shoulder and elbow. The unit also has one 12 months clinical hand surgery fellow and 4 accredited AOA training registrars.
The clinical hand surgery fellow has commitments at Dandenong Hospital for on call, patient care and outpatient review. He/she is expected to contribute to teaching of registrars at Dandenong Hospital in the Australian Orthopaedic surgery advanced training program.
There is a fortnightly Journal Club and didactic teaching. The fellows are also encouraged to complete a research project ready for publication or presentation during their tenure. Laboratory research may be conducted in collaboration with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Melbourne or at the Hand and Wrist Biomechanics Laboratory at the O'Brien Institute.
Dandenong Hospital is one of Melbourne's major acute hospitals providing a range of services to the people living in Dandenong and surrounding areas. It is also one of Victoria’s largest teaching and referral hospitals and is a specialist referral centre for a wide rural and regional catchment.
The hospital provides emergency care and also has a comprehensive range of specialist units including an Intensive Care Unit, Cardiac Unit and Special Care Nursery. The hospital performs approximately 2000 Orthopaedic and over 1500 Hand surgery cases per annum.
