The Department for Trauma Surgery in Innsbruck belongs to the biggest and most recognized trauma centers in Europe. We treat about 6.800 patients inhouse and perform 6.600 major trauma surgeries. On top of this we have 117.000 outpatient contacts, including 50.000 acutely injured patients per year.

Roughly 250 health care professionals - including 28 specialists for Trauma Surgery and 22 Residents - take care of our patients 24 h and 365 days. We mainly deal with acute trauma, posttraumatic problems as well as with degenerative diseases in all periods of life.

Our Department for Trauma Surgery offers a wide range of progressive surgical, diagnostic and treatment services that are focused on delivering the high tech and high touch style of patient care for which we have been recognized for many decades.

Hand-Team
Innsbruck has a very long tradition and international reputation in Hand and Wrist surgery. Through our extensive clinical and surgical experience and excellent facilities for diagnosis and treatment, we can provide patients an individual treatment concept for the fast recovery of hand and elbow function. The hand team works closely with the shoulder team on a common ward.

European Hand-Trauma-Center
Since 2011, our department has been accredited as an European Hand-Trauma-Center under the guidelines of FESSH (Federation of Hand Surgery Societies of Europe).

Specialization Hand Surgery
The Board of the Austrian Medical Association has adopted an interdisciplinary specialization in Hand Surgery (general surgery, pediatric surgery, orthopedics, plastic surgery and trauma surgery).

  • Hand transplant
Together with the Department of Plastic Surgery, Department of Thoracic and Transplant Surgery, Departments of Anesthesiology and Radiology 3 bilateral and one unilateral forearm were successfully transplanted.
  • Development of surgical techniques
Numerous new surgical techniques have been developed at the Department of Trauma Surgery in Innsbruck.

Research
Trauma surgery represents, because of its high amount of in- and outpatients and its wide range of treatment modalities, a special challenge in clinical research. We are involved in several types of projects and they reach from monocentric "Investigator-Initiated-Trials" (IITs) to international multicenter trials in collaboration with Clinical Research Organizations (CRO) and sponsors.
