In 1860, Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, established the first professional training school for nurses, the Nightingale Training School at St Thomas’ Hospital.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust is part of King’s Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre (AHSC), a collaboration between a world-leading university, King’s College London (KCL) and Guy’s and St Thomas’, King’s College Hospital and South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trusts. King’s is the largest centre for the education of doctors, dentists and other healthcare professionals in Europe. Within the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine, the King’s College London GKT School of Medical Education is responsible for the education and training of medical students.
The Guy’s and St Thomas’ Department of Orthopaedics is one of London's leading orthopaedic departments and a centre of excellence, offering the full range of specialist Orthopaedic services. The Department of Orthopaedics is also a member of the National Orthopaedic Alliance.
Mr Lorenzo Garagnani, Consultant Orthopaedic Hand & Wrist Surgeon, is the Upper Limb Fellowship Director at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.
In 2020, Mr Garagnani and Dr Fiona Sandford, Consultant Hand Therapist, were appointed the first Leads of Guy’s and St Thomas’ multidisciplinary OrthoPlastic Hand Unit that includes the Orthopaedic Hand Surgery, the Plastic Hand Surgery and the Hand Therapy Teams.
As a tertiary referral centre, the whole range of hand, wrist and upper limb disorders are assessed and treated at Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals.
Furthermore, Mr Garagnani has also co-founded and leads jointly with Dr Muriel Holder, Consultant in Clinical Genetics, a highly specialised multidisciplinary Congenital Hand and Upper Limb Differences Clinic. This is the first clinic in the UK where the patients have a simultaneous multidisciplinary assessment by specialists in Clinical Genetics, Hand Surgery, Hand Therapy and Occupational Therapy. Paediatric and adult patients with complex congenital limb anomalies are assessed and treated. Prenatal consultations are also performed.
Among the hand and wrist procedures routinely performed at Guy’s and St Thomas’ there are:
- treatment of complex wrist and carpal fractures and dislocations
- treatment of hand trauma
- wrist arthroscopy
- hand and wrist ligament and tendon repair and reconstruction
- correction of hand and wrist malunion and non-union
- hand and wrist joint replacement/fusion
- scaphoid non-union surgery
- tendon transfers
- rheumatoid hand surgery
- peripheral nerve surgery
- the entire range of elective hand and wrist procedures
- congenital hand and upper limb differences surgery
Research opportunities are also available for fellows.
| Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital, London and Wrightington Hospital, Lancashire are happy to offer joint IBRA Fellowships to give Fellows a broader experience across two IBRA Upper Limb Training Centres. Both Centres offer specialist experience in Upper Limb surgery but with a focus on Hand surgery at Guy's and St Thomas' and on Elbow surgery at Wrightington. |
