Is among the largest Institute of Orthopedics and Traumatology in Latin America and among major research centers in Brazil. In the IOT are treated annually in the emergency room of IOT more than 40,000 patients of whom 2100 are surgical cases.

The Hand Team is composed by 6 staffs members  , 6 Hand Fellows , 6 Orthopeadic Resident  .  In the coming year ,2010 , we are going to have 10 more member , for a 24 hours  assistance of patient with acute severe injury of upper and lower extremity , including  replant and emergency free flaps.

All the staff members develop regular attendance of patient  admitted at the IOT , and follow-up at their office until the end of treatment . Area of special interest
  1. Trauma of high complexity of upper and lower extremity
  2. Complex fracture of upper extremity
  3. Acute and chronic Brachial plexus injury
  4. Congenital pathologies of upper extremity
  5. Orthopeadic pathologies of wrist and hand

MICROSURGERY LABORATORY
The Laboratory of Microsurgery of IOT was founded in 1996, and since then has been equipped and prepared to provide all the conditions for training and development of microsurgical technique. Located at the Research Center at the 8th floor of IOT building, the training is performed with microscope in rats, although this process started using surgical gloves and ending with the technique of microvascular   vessels. There is a monitor who check all the learning process . At the micro-lab we also develop research projects , related with microsurgery and orthopeadic topics . A vivarium allows the realization of experimental research . All the residents and fellows have specific period of training at the microsurgical lab , that associated with the surgical experience give a complete formation in hand and microsurgery.
