Founded in 1853 by the Italian Society of Charities, the Italian Hospital of Buenos Aires is a non-profit civil association dedicated to general and highly complex medicine.

The assistance, teaching, and research are the institutional pillars that, with a great vision of the future, were established by their founders and that today, more than a century and a half of its creation, the Hospital keeps current with the same passion. Each year, the Hospital provides 2,950,000 consultations and performs 51,000 surgical procedures in its 41 operating rooms. It has a capacity of 785 beds. Its work team is made up of 9,000 people: 3,400 doctors, 3,300 health staff members, and 2,300 administrative employees.

The hospital has over 40 medical specialties, a complete diagnostic and treatment equipment, and renowned professional staff. It also has an Institute of Basic Sciences and Experimental Medicine and its own university with careers such as Nursing, Medicine, Biochemistry, and Pharmacy. In 2015, we achieved Academic Hospital accreditation, granted by the Joint Commission International.

Service of Hand and Upper-limb reconstructive surgery
The orthopedic service was created in 1944, by Dr. Carlos Ottolenghi, one of the most important orthopedic surgeons in the word. In 1964, Dr. Aldo Illarramendi was appointed as the first Chief of the Hand Team.

Today, our team includes four staff members, five associate members, and two hand fellows, and it offers services covering the whole spectrum of hand surgery. We carry out 25,000 medical consultations and perform 1,500 surgeries per year. The academic activity is key in our service, therefore, we hold three weekly scientific meetings (a journal club, a meeting for post-operative discussions and a general meeting for the orthopaedic service). We published 54 international and 45 national articles until early 2018. The hand fellowship has a duration of one year with an option of extending it to 2 years.

Specific areas of surgical expertise include:

  • Trauma of high complexity of upper extremity
  • Orthopaedic pathologies of wrist and hand
  • Rheumatic arthritis
  • Acute and chronic Brachial plexus injury
  • Congenital pathologies of upper extremity
  • Arthroplasty (elbow-hand-wrist)
  • Microsurgical flaps for upper and lower extremity
  • Post-traumatic correction and reconstruction of fractures and nerve injuries
  • Wrist Arthroscopy
