Singapore General Hospital (SGH) is the largest public tertiary hospital in Singapore with a capacity of more than 1,600 beds. It is also the oldest, founded in 1821, making it 200 years old this year.
SGH is a leading teaching hospital for undergraduate medical training as well as postgraduate and advanced training of specialist doctors, nurses and allied health professionals.

Students from both the National University of Singapore’s Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, Duke-NUS Medical School and Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine spend a substantial part of their curriculum in SGH. The hospital’s medical staffs hold teaching positions at both schools. It is one of the main residency training centres as well as postgraduate medical trainings and fellowship centres for subspecialty training across all major medical specialties in Singapore. It is also an academic medical centre where close collaboration with the 3 medical schools, the local universities as well as established medically related organizations and commercial start-ups to ensure high level research and state of art technology are applied in the delivery of excellent and optimal patient care.

The Department of Hand and Reconstructive Microsurgery (HRM) has been formed since 1985 when it was called Department of Hand Surgery, it became Department of HRM in 2019 emphasizing on not just hand surgery but also microsurgery being an integral part of the cases managed as all the specialists are well trained to handle and treat such cases.

There are 4 core subspecialty services within the department to cater to the needs of our patients namely:
1. Advance Microsurgery services
2. Wrist services
3. Congenital Hand Services
4. Brachial plexus and Peripheral Nerve Services.

They are each helmed by senior specialists who are well trained in the relevant subspecialty to provide expert care for patients presenting with more complicated conditions. However, despite the differences in expertise, all specialists in the department are well versed in the core competencies of hand and microsurgery and are able to handle all aspects of conditions relating to hand, wrist, peripheral nerves, structures directly related to the functions of the hand such as traumatic, degenerative, neoplastic, infective and metabolic conditions.

Being one of the 2 tertiary hospitals in Singapore and in particular hand and wrist conditions, the caseloads for Department of HRM has been significant and adequate to fulfil its role as the premier training centre for hand and wrist surgery together with the staff of 10 specialists all of whom are esteemed faculty for the hospital and the affiliated universities and medical schools.
