The Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Hand Surgery and Reconstructive Microsurgery (Chair: Prof. Jong-Woong Park, MD, PhD) offers the complete spectrum of Hand Surgery.

Specific areas of surgical and clinical expertise including:

• All acute trauma at the hand, wrist, and forearm as well as the complete microsurgical reconstruction of the upper and lower extremity with procedures, free tissue transplantation for soft tissue coverage, functional reconstruction, and bone & soft tissue reconstruction such as vascularized fibular osteocutaneous graft.
• Acute nerve injuries to the upper extremity, nerve grafting and tendon transfers after chronic nerve injuries
• Compressive neuropathy of upper & lower extremity
• All types of fractures of the hand, wrist, and forearm, with wide experience in fractures of the scaphoid and malunion of the radius & ulna
• Wrist & hand Arthroscopic Surgery including unstable DRUJ and TFCC injury
• Salvage procedures of the hand and wrist
• Congenital deformities
• Correction of rheumatoid deformities
• Tumor surgery; Oncologic reconstruction after resection of soft tissue sarcoma
• Rehabilitation after hand injuries
• Research projects:
  - Development of surgical instruments and implants
  - Nerve reconstruction and regenration related researches
  - Collaborative research for Bionic hand and Nerve-machine interface
  - 3D-printed nerve conduit
  - Development of new medical material for enhanced tissue regeneration

Korea University Medicine Anam campus is located in the heart of Seoul. The Korea University Medicine is a huge health care system composed of 3 hospitals and college of medicine. The main campus near by Anam Hospital is very beautiful and top-ranked university in Korea. The Anam hospital functions as a terminal treatment center in Korea for the seriously injured patients or cancer patients care. 3 hospitals in Korea University Medicine care more than 3.79 million patients per year on an in and out patient treatment basis. Among 3 hospitals, Anam hospital has more than 1000 beds and recently a brand-new smart & intelligent hospital is under construction. As a main hospital of Korea University Medicine, Anam hospital functions as an academic hospital of the Korea University and running a hand surgery & reconstructive microsurgery fellowship training program.

The research interests of our hand team is a study related with tissue and nerve regeneration and nerve-machine interface for the control of future bionic hand.  

For IBRA scholarship, we accept a short-term fellowship between 1-4 weeks (Program B) and 1 to 3 months (Program C) for clinical training in Hand Surgery & Reconstructive Microsurgery, and wrist arthroscopic surgery with a daily spectrum of elective cases. The participants may have experimental experiences and learn about the basic research techniques related hand and microsurgery and cadaver dissection for flap surgery (variable according to the lab. schedule)
