The Hand and upper Extremity Center of the Maastricht University Medical Center is located in the southernmost part of the Netherlands, close to the German and Belgian border. The department is regionally, nationally and internationally acclaimed for excellence in clinical care and education.

The hand and upper extremity center of the Maastricht University Medical Center is formed by 6 departments of the University Hospital of which 3 are involved in surgical specialities, being the department of trauma surgery, orthopaedic surgery and plastic surgery.

The majority of the hand surgeons involved in the hand centre are European Board of Hand Surgery certified surgeons. (FESSH / EBHS).

The complete spectrum of hand and upper extremity surgery is offered. Specific areas of upper extremity surgery based on expertise include:
  • All acute hand, wrist and upper extremity trauma. The complete spectrum of microsurgical procedures of the upper and lower extremity is offered, including a 24-hour replantation service.
  • Free flap tissue reconstructions
  • Acute nerve injuries
  • All types of fractures to the hand, wrist and upper extremity
  • National referral center for scaphoid nonunion, radius malunion and distal radio-ulnar joint instability
  • Complete range of salvage procedures for hand and wrist including total and partial arthrodesis.
  • All type of prosthesis for hand and wrist, including hemi and total wrist arthroplasties and semi constrained distal radio-ulnar joint arthroplasty
  • Arthroscopic wrist surgery
 
The Maastricht University Medical Center is a regional level-1 traumacenter and is facilitated by the German Cristoph Europa 1 emergency rescue helicopter and the Dutch Lifeliner 3 trauma helicopter. The hospital has 715 beds with all necessary facilities for 24/7 trauma care available. Over 29.000 patients are presented at the emergency department annually. More than 1.000 hand surgical operative procedures are performed annually and the number of annual outpatient contacts for hand pathology is around 10.000.
There is research output from several PhD research projects on hand related topics, including prospective research concerning scaphoid nonunion, radius malunion and radiocarpal and distal radio-ulnar joint arthrosis.
